Playboy vs. Hustler

Did you hear that? Those loud trumpets you hear in the background is the sound of Hustler entering the adult Video-on-Demand market with much fanfare. FlyntDigital, the online arm of Hustler, is a major supplier of affiliate content. That same arm is now ready to flex its streaming, downloadable muscle.

As a mainstream, offline, adult-male publication, Playboy is near the top and has been so for many years. The Playboy name, along with its accompanying rabbit-head, is recognized the world over. I’d always thought that that name recognition and success would translate to the cyber-world as well. Apparently, this is not the case. Online it seems that Hustler content is king. I haven’t done a scientific poll on this (I know everyone says this, but really who has the time?). But it seems that Barely Legal, Busty Beauties, and Leg World content is more in supply (and subsequent demand) than Beach Babes, Big Breast Babes, and Cheerleaders & College Girls. I can only go by the sponsors of people I know, and the frequency of what I’ve seen online. I could be wrong.

I know we’re talking apples and oranges here: Hugh Hefner doesn’t allow any depictions of his playmates and models to be associated with hardcore material. Larry Flynt, on the other, apparently sets no such restrictions. However, Spice, the hardcore leg of Playboy Enterprises (I promise to stop with the body parts analogy shortly) , receives no where near the online fame or notoriety of Hustler.

Perhaps FlyntDigital is miles ahead because it has been in the affiliate sponsor game much longer. Perhaps, Playboy Cash just needs to catch up. Whatever the reason, the arrival of the former’s signature adult theaters has widened the gap between the respective programs. I know there are other successful Video-on-Demand suppliers (most notably AEBN). But those other suppliers have no where near the popularity of Hustler.

So in terms of quality, variety, and name recognition (online and off), who is the leader in adult affiliate content? Right now, it seems to be Hustler. For a while now, I’ve touted Playboy cyber-content as best; but maybe it’s time I changed my views and got with the program.
Literally.
